In 1991 mark goulthorpe established the decoi atelier to undertake a series of architectural competitions, largely theoretically based. these resulted in numerous accolades around the world, which quickly established a reputation for thoughtful and elegant design work suggestive of new possibilities for architecture and architectural praxis. significantly, such work was presented under the rubric decoi, which was intended to allow for possibility of collaborative practice, and which has latterly become essential to a digitally-networked creative enterprise. decoi has received awards from the royal academy in london, the french ministry of culture and the architectural league of new york, and has represented france at the venice biennale and the united nations. based in paris, decoi has developed a supple working practice to be able to bring its design skill to bear effectively in an international arena.

tokenhouse foyer london, 2002

a convoluted entrance foyer has been wrapped into a single uniform surface, which has been algorithmically generated to attain a sinuous, stretched character. this marks an attempt to exceed the simple mathematical givens of current design software to be able to attain a surface character different from a uniform nurbs surfacing. the space itself will be sensed as a single body-in-tension, which through its taut muscularity offers a quite serene sensuality, and an expansive lightness. design team: mark goulthorpe, matteo grimaldi.

paramorph (gateway) south bank 1999 london – - selected

the gateway to the south bank is a sort of trapping device, both in the sense that its form derives from the capture of a sound trace, and that it serves as a vessel to register the movement and sound of people passing through it. such trappings will be used to create soundscapes and lightscapes which will play across the stretched surfaces of the form. formally it has been developed as a paramorph – an element which, whilst keeping the same base characteristics, adopts different form(s), in this case being formally constrained in being describable using ruled surfaces. design: mark goulthorpe, gabriele evangelisti, gaspard giroud, felix robbins. parametric: mark burry + greg more, grant dunlop, andrew maher. mathematical: alex scott. engineer: david glover ovearup&p.

pallas house bukit tunku, malaysia 1997

the pallas house was designed in response to a challenge by a developer to explore new technological possibilities. the warped stone walls of the landscape are offset by the complex-curved perforated metallic shroud which envelopes the house itself. the shroud, entirely non-standard in that every component is a complex one-off, demands post-industrial manufacture using cnc machining. it announces the re-birth of non-standard productive possibilities, of sculptural forms and decorative surfaces, of the re-emergence of a now numeric craft. design team: mark goulthorpe, matthieu le savre, karine chartier, nadir tazdait, arnaud descombes + bernard cache, patrick beaucé. engineers: ovearup&p david glover, sean billings, andy sedgewick.

ether/i geneva – 1995

conceived for the 50th anniversary of the united nations in geneva, the project is a frozen trace of a disappearing dance (a duet) – a capture of movement or differance. materialized as a double tessellated surface of aluminium, both structure and surface, alternately ephemeral or visceral, benign or aggressive, the piece celebrates the potential offered by computer genera(c)tion, the 4000 non-standard components cut and welded with accuracy. design team: mark goulthorpe, zainie zainul, wilf sinclair, rachel doherty, matthieu le savre. computer modelling: michel saup. dancers: joni & jacopo, the frankfurt ballet. engineering: david glover ovearup&p. fabrication: optikinetics. sponsors: guthries, yayasan seni. thanks to: asri ghafar.
